What Is Marble?
What Is Marble? An Exceptional Natural Stone
Marble is a metamorphic rock composed mainly of calcium carbonate (calcite), formed by the transformation of limestone under high pressure and temperature, often caused by tectonic movements. This slow and natural process profoundly alters the structure of the rock, giving it high density, a crystalline appearance, and its characteristic veining.
Its beauty does not come only from its polished surface, but from its geological composition and its history of formation. At Artisanat d’Époque, we strive to highlight this millennia-old origin by working exclusively with natural, non-reconstituted marble blocks.
A Noble Material at the Heart of Interior Design
Used for over 2,000 years, marble is an iconic material in architecture and decorative arts. From Greek temples to Roman palaces, Gothic cathedrals to Haussmann apartments, it has always held a privileged place in prestigious spaces.
Today, it is sought after for its strength, its refined and luminous aesthetics, and its unique character. No two marble slabs are alike. This uniqueness is what we celebrate in our decorative objects, designed to bring a mineral and elegant touch to contemporary interiors.

How Is Marble Formed? Geological Origin and Varieties
Marble results from the metamorphosis of limestone, a sedimentary rock rich in calcium carbonate. Under geological pressure and heat (generally above 600°C), calcite crystals reorganize, giving marble its homogeneous, glossy texture and sometimes spectacular veining.Il existe plusieurs types de marbre, classés selon leur couleur, leur origine géographique et leur composition :
– White marble : very pure, rich in calcite
– Black marble : often richer in graphite
– Veined Marbles: with the presence of minerals such as serpentine, iron, or hematite
– Orange marble : rich in iron oxides, it offers warm shades ranging from ocher to rust.
Why Is Marble So Highly Valued in Decoration?
Marble is prized as much for its technical qualities as for its aesthetic value. It is naturally resistant to heat, time, and humidity (provided it is properly maintained). Its surface can be polished, honed, or bush-hammered depending on decorative use.
Above all, it is seen as a living material: its veins tell the geological story of the Earth. Unlike synthetic materials, marble evolves over time. A patina may appear, making each piece even more authentic. This is why it is favored in the world of high-end design, interior architecture, and collectible craftsmanship.
